POETIC ACTIVISM

A workshop to experience the present as an imaginative and material resource for poetic activism. Participants were invited to create short testimonies and to become agents of change through works that explored creative engagements with diasporic imaginaries. Projects were developed through playful exercises over four weeks through creative writing, deep listening, honesty, DIY video language, and non-traditional approaches to film history. Video activism demands an aesthetic of urgency, using the video camera as a deterrent against violence and as a challenge of the audiovisual structures of repression and surveillance. Through the workshop, participants from different parts of the world developed short videos of aspects of their daily lives, inviting memories to reveal themselves. Reflecting on feelings of separation and isolation, rebellion and togetherness, each participant was invited to think about how they wished to represent themselves to the world. The 7 videos presented below engage in themes of immigration, the loss of sense and senses during the pandemic, ruminations over the dreamed arrival of an HIV / AIDS vaccine, and personal narratives that are part love letter and part manifesto.

I wish I was a square
By Lucia Flórez
Duration: 2:38 min

“I wish I was a square” is a poetic visual piece that explores the introspective journey of reconnecting with structure. Through evoking rigidity, the author anchors herself in the illusion of control as a placebo-recognized, auto-defense mechanism to get through difficult times. The piece juxtaposes the satirical manifestation of being unbending with circular-like subjective shots that convey otherwise. The film takes place in the Sacred Valley, Cusco, Perú an energetic location of deep meaning for the director.

I miss you, strange
By María-Fernanda Araya
Duration: 2:46 min

“I miss you, strange” is a video letter dedicated to everyone I have missed, inspired by my grandfather's writings and songs. The collage of images was taken within the context of the pandemic, all from my house and the house of my grandmother, a person with whom I have shared greatly during this time of quarantine. This is about how someone can be missed through an image, through a person, through a song, through space, and sometimes simply through memories.

Love Tripping
By Sof Echeverri
Duration: 4:16 min

This is a poetic video that sings and is in your face. This piece is a way for the author to answer his questions about solitude and to portray his feelings of loneliness, as well as an exploration of the intersection between moments of insecurity and moments of joy. It is about Sof's dysphoric and euphoric moments. The video takes place in two meaningful locations for the author, his own house and the whole ocean.
